How to do aftercare for a tattoo
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals well.
General Tattoo Aftercare
Second Skin Bandage
1. Leave the Bandage On
-
Keep the tattoo bandage on for 6 days (or as instructed by your artist).
-
The bandage is permeable, allowing your tattoo to begin healing underneath it.
-
You can shower with the bandage on, but avoid hot water.
-
Do not submerge your tattoo in water (e.g., swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, baths) during the healing process.
2. Removing the Bandage
-
Peel from the corners and edges, slowly pulling away from your skin.
-
It is recommended to remove the bandage in the shower for ease.
-
Fluid buildup under the bandage may leak, so be cautious to avoid dirtying your sheets and clothing.
-
After removal:
-
Wash the skin with unscented soap.
-
Pat the area dry with a clean towel or paper towel.
-
Gently rub off any adhesive left on the tattoo.
-
-
Note: Removing the bandage may feel uncomfortable, as your new tattoo is tender.
3. What to Avoid
-
Do not peel the bandage up or down aggressively, as it may damage your new tattoo or skin.
-
Do not pick at the bandage.
-
Do not itch or scratch the tattoo.
-
Do not submerge your tattoo in water during the healing process.
4. Monitor Skin Irritation
-
Mild irritation around the bandaged area is normal.
-
If irritation persists, contact the shop or a doctor, as it may indicate an allergic reaction to the bandage or adhesive.
5. Protect from Sunlight
-
Avoid exposing the fresh tattoo to direct sunlight, as UV rays can damage the healing skin and fade the ink.
-
After the tattoo has fully healed, apply a high-SPF sunscreen whenever it will be exposed to the sun to preserve its vibrancy and detail.
6. Do Not Pick or Scratch
-
It is normal for the tattoo to scab or peel during healing. Let this process happen naturally.
-
Avoid picking at scabs or scratching the tattoo, even if it itches, as this can lead to ink loss or scarring.
Tattoo Aftercare
Without a Second Skin
1. Keep the Tattoo Clean
-
Wash Regularly: Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
-
Use Clean Hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.
-
Pat Dry: After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or disposable paper towel. Avoid rubbing.
2. Apply Ointment or Lotion
-
Use a thin layer of tattoo-specific ointment or a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic lotion.
-
Do not overapply, as this can clog the pores and slow the healing process.
3. Prevent Irritation
-
Wear loose-fitting, breathable clothing to avoid friction against the tattoo.
-
Avoid direct contact with dirty surfaces or items.
4. Avoid Water Submersion
-
Do not submerge the tattoo in water (e.g., swimming pools, hot tubs, or baths) until fully healed.
-
Quick showers are fine, but avoid letting strong water pressure hit the tattoo directly.
